IS SOCIAL MEDIA AFFECTING YOU?
How Can Social Media Hurt Your Personal Injury Case?
Social media has become a part of life for so many. It gives people an online platform to share various information about themselves with pictures, written messages, videos and other forms made available to them. Some of the popular platforms include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.
Unfortunately, if you are involved in an accident or any other personal injury case, sharing pictures or other information about the incident could be considered evidence and can be used against you by Insurance companies.
As much as you would like to alert family and friends about your accident, there are many negative consequences you could face for sharing information online without talking to your attorney first. Some of the negative consequences include:
- Your comments or story about the incident will be used as part of your testimony and if it contradicts the evidence you have presented in your case, it could make it difficult for you to successfully prosecute your claim.
- The information you share, could be used to determine the severity of the incident. If you are able to participate in daily activities without hardship, the insurance company could use your own pictures or videos to argue that your injuries were not as severe as you claim.
- When you share information about your case online, just remember that there may be more interested parties than your target audience. There is a good chance that your online postings may be used in a way you never intended.
